Spring Season Cancellation
Thank you very much for your patience and understanding as we’ve worked through this unprecedented period of uncertainty. As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has continued to unfold, we’ve been planning for several scenarios where we could modify, shorten, extend or altogether cancel our Spring Season with the health and safety of our players, coaches and community as our highest priority. The implementation of any one plan would require guidance from State of Connecticut, the Town of Darien and the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association. Over the past weeks, this guidance has tended to be incremental in nature with rolling school cancellations and shelter in place orders as both the progression of the pandemic and our understanding of it has evolved. Based on the new guidance adopted by all of these organizations calling for social distancing measures to continue until at least May 20th and in consultation with other youth clubs in Fairfield county, we have decided to CANCEL the traditional DSA Spring Season.
The Darien Soccer Association has been operating as a volunteer run, non-profit youth soccer club in Darien for nearly 30 years. We budget each year to provide the highest quality, lowest cost programming that generates breakeven financial results. Our operating costs consist of coach and staff payments, insurance, field permits, credit card and league fees. Please understand that this public health crisis and related full season cancellation are completely unprecedented for us. While we acted quickly to limit cash outflows to maximize potential refunds prior this cancellation, certain of these costs have to be incurred upfront and are unrecoverable. After careful allocation of program level expenses and including a substantial contribution from our modest cash buffer, we are offering the following refund amounts:
Helping Our Coaches – Coaches Relief Fund
While we believe the decision to maximize refunds is ultimately the right one, it is also an extremely difficult decision to make. Two thirds of your registration fee goes to paying our coaches. As discussed in our last email, our coaches have long been one of the cornerstones of the DSA through their professional and personal commitment to our community. Unlike many other youth sports, DSA relies on professional coaches for many of whom coaching is their full-time job and primary source of income. This cancellation will be very hard on them through no fault of their own.
In order to support our coaches, we are asking you to please consider donating some or all of your refund amount to our Coaches Relief Fund. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all donations are tax deductible. 100% of donated refunds will be distributed to our coaches and we plan a recognition program for families who participate.

We are privileged to steward one of the largest town soccer programs in Connecticut driven 100% by the support and involvement of our Darien community. While we are devastated to cancel the DSA Spring Season, we continue to work on ways to bring DSA to you including:
- Age based digital training provided by our coaches free of charge
- Weekly coaches challenges that can be recorded by our players and sent back with the winners to be posted to our social media
- Access to 1v1 or small group lessons or informal game days to be determined as social distancing limitations are lifted
- Information around Travel Tryouts and Fall 2020 programming as soon as we can share
